Alright ladies and gents…

If you’re a fan of doughnuts and want to impress the most picky of breakfast goers, look no further! I’ll share with you a secret recipe that has made me the coolest mom ever, and has fooled my kids into believing I’m an amazing pastry chef! No, I’m just kidding about the second part. My kids know I’m no pastry pro, but with this recipe, you might just get someone to believe it! I can’t wait for you to give ‘em a try!

At first glance, the ingredients will make you question my sanity, but I assure you, you won’t be disappointed. Just follow the simple steps below and your taste buds (and your children) will thank you!

Tools you’ll need:

  • A cast iron skillet or dutch oven pot

  • Small round cookie cutter or small metal pastry tip (for the doughnut hole)

  • A large slotted spoon or wooden chopsticks

  • wire cooling rack

Ingredients:

Doughnuts:

1 tube Pillsbury Grands biscuit dough (yep, i’m serious)

2 1/2 cup vegetable oil

Glaze:

1 cup powdered sugar

1/2 cup heavy whipping cream

1/4 tsp vanilla extract

Yep, seems crazy I know, but I assure you, your taste-testers minds will be blown!

You can use the large biscuits or the small ones. My philosophy: if you’re gonna make ‘em, make ‘em big!

The process:

  1. Add the oil to your cast iron skillet or dutch oven. I’m sure you could use a metal or nonstick pan if it’s deep enough, I’ve just never tried it. Note: The cast iron skillet I used was a 9”. Bigger is ok, you’ll just have to add more oil.

  2. Heat the oil to approx 350°

    1. If you have a thermometer, test the oil before adding the biscuits. If you don’t have one, you can use a little piece of raw biscuit dough as a tester. Add it to the hot oil and see if it bubbles up. If it sinks, your oil isn’t hot enough. If it darkens really quickly, your oil is too hot. Adjust accordingly.

  3. While oil heats, separate the biscuits onto a tray and flatten them out just a bit with your fingers to prevent them from getting too puffy while they cook.

  4. Using a cookie cutter or piping tip, punch a hole in the center of each biscuit.

    1. If you bake often, I’d highly recommend getting a set of circular cutters from Amazon. They’re very inexpensive and are perfect for a variety baking situations.

  5. Once the oil is ready, add 3-4 biscuits at a time. Adding too many will drop the temp of your oil too much.

  6. When the doughnuts are golden brown on one side, carefully flip them over with a slotted spoon or wooden chopstick. Once cooked evenly on both sides, carefully transfer them to a wire cooling rack.

  7. When all your biscuits have miraculously transformed into beautifully browned doughnuts, mix up your glaze and either dip them or drizzle it on, whatever you prefer!

There you have it, the most delicious, easiest doughnuts ever! And everyone who tries them will be amazed by your crazy awesome pastry skills. Don’t worry, I won’t divulge the ‘biscuit’ secret if you don’t!!
